VANCOUVER – a century old water main in downtown Vancouver will be replaced in early 2020.
Engineering crews will begin construction on Jan. 6, 2020 on replacement of a critical water main along West Georgia St. in the heart of Vancouver’s downtown.
“Installed almost 100 years ago, the water main has reached the end of its service life and has a history of recent breaks. The most recent break occurred this morning (Dec 11),” a City of Vancouver release stated.
The project will involve replacement of 375 metres of water main and sewer infrastructure in three phases from Howe St. to Thurlow St. The new water main is expected to last 100 years and will be in line with a seismically resilient water network.
During construction a minimum of three traffic lanes, two westbound and one eastbound will be maintained but commuters should expect significant delays along the Georgia corridor until the project is completed.
In 2020, the City will replace 13.4 km of water main. Vancouver has 1,489 km of water pipes valued at $2.4 billion.
