HUDSON’S HOPE, B.C. — Crews have begun work on the dry creek section of the Highway 29 realignment near Hudson’s Hope, B.C.
The work, which is being done as part of the Site C Dam project, is meant to connect the community of Hudson’s Hope with the Alaska Highway and Fort St. John. Highway 29 goes along the Peace River in northeastern British Columbia.
According to BC Hydro, when the Site C reservoir filling begins in September 2023, the Peace River will get more than twice as wide, covering parts of the highway.
To address this, BC Hydro partnered with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to realign segments of Highway 29. Construction started in 2018 and will continue until mid-2023.
The work involves designing and building 32 kilometres of highway, including new bridges at Cache Creek, Halfway River, Lynx Creek, Dry Creek and Farrell Creek.
Each portion of the project requires:
- Geotechnical, environmental, and archeological studies
- Improved highway alignments, including grading, paving and bridge construction
- Geotechnical stabilization works
- Shifting electrical and phone lines
- Decommissioning the old highway
