WEST ST. PAUL, MAN. — Manitoba officials recently announced they have wrapped up work on a new bridge over the Grassmere Drain on Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 9 near West St. Paul.
Officials noted the $5.9-million bridge not only adds capacity for vehicles but also adds a separate active transportation path to improve safety for pedestrians. Officials anticipate the bridge will last for 75 years.
The old bridge was an aging reinforced concrete box culvert constructed in 1913. Near the end it saw more than 10,000 vehicles drive over it each day.
The new bridge is 21.5 metres long, supports four lanes of traffic and is capable of RTAC loading. It also was designed to mitigate flood risks. Its structure allows for a wider channel opening, improving flow during high water events including spring run-off.
“This is exciting news for West St. Paul, our residents and surrounding communities. The new bridge on PTH 9 addresses flooding and drainage concerns in our community and neighbouring communities and improves traffic safety with a median and turning lanes,” said Mayor Cheryl Christian, RM of West St. Paul, in a statement. “The beautiful new pedestrian bridge promotes a safe, connected and active community.”
