CALGARY — Alberta construction leaders are urging the province to keep the industry an essential service as it braces for the second wave of COVID-19
The Alberta Construction Association (ACA) sent a letter to Premier Jason Kenney reminding him of the work the industry has done to keep crews safe.
“Since the outbreak, Alberta’s construction industry has collaborated to develop protocols and share best practices,” reads a release from the ACA. “Our professionals on jobsites calmly execute these protocols every day without incident, assessing and managing COVID as they would with any new hazard. Suppliers of materials have significantly tightened delivery and pick-up to minimize risk of exposure and transmission. Office personnel have successfully utilized technology to minimize exposure in the management of construction projects.”
The ACA noted as of its Nov. 20 board meeting, members reported that for months there have been no known incidents of virus transmission on sites and any cases resulting from other sources have been dealt with effectively using the industry developed protocols.
“Construction trades make up one in 10 jobs in this province, with thousands of additional jobs in project design, management and related manufacturing and services,” wrote Frederick Vine, chairman of the ACA board of directors. “These families across Alberta are counting on your government to preserve their livelihoods as they continue to operate safely. As COVID increases during a second wave, please ensure construction remains an essential service for the benefit of our province.”
