B.C. announces $136 million for COVID-19 infrastructure grants 

The Province of British Columbia is accepting applications from local governments, Indigenous communities and not-for-profit organizations for nearly $136 million in infrastructure grants for communities to develop COVID-19 responses. The funding is in partnership with the federal government and is part of the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream (CVRIS), a new stream under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. CVRIS will support projects that focus on retrofits, rehabilitation and upgrades to existing local government and Indigenous community buildings, COVID-19 response infrastructure, active transportation and disaster mitigation. 

Lincor Wins 2020 Gord Stewart Safety Award 

The Independent Contractors and Businesses Association of B.C. (ICBA) has given its 2020 Gord Stewart Safety Award to Lincor for their Industrial Athletes Injury Prevention Program. The Gord Stewart Award is presented annually by ICBA and WorkSafeBC to acknowledge individuals and companies for their efforts in the prevention of workplace incidents, injuries and illnesses. The Journal of Commerce will have more on this story. 

BC Liberals announce critic roles 

The BC Liberals have announced their MLA critic roles as the party takes on the role of official opposition after Premier John Horgan’s NDP Party won a majority in the recent provincial election. Tom Shypitka will be energy, mines and low carbon innovation critic; Ellis Ross will tackle environment and climate change strategy; and Michael Lee will helm transportation, infrastructure and Translink. John Rustad will be forests, lands and natural resources critic and Mike Bernier will cover finance. Shirley Bond is the interim leader of the official opposition as well as critic for seniors services and long-term care.  

Yukon government rejects ATAC Resources Tote Road permit 

The Yukon government has rejected an application from Vancouver-based ATAC Resources to construct a proposed tote road to its Tiger Gold Deposit in east-central Yukon to support advanced exploration. The tote road was conditionally approved by both the Yukon Government and the FNNND in March of 2018 under the Yukon Environmental and Socio-Economic Assessment Act. ATAC stated in a release that it “does not agree with many aspects of the government’s decision and, in consultation with its external legal counsel, is evaluating its options.”
