BURNABY, B.C. – All work on the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion project in B.C.’s Lower Mainland halted after an employee of a contractor working on the Burnaby Terminal was seriously injured on Dec. 15.
“The individual remains in hospital in stable condition and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family,” said Trans Mountain in a statement to media. “All construction operations in the Lower Mainland have been immediately suspended and Trans Mountain is fully cooperating with WorkSafeBC and the Canada Energy Regulator (CER).”
The incident was reported to CER late on Dec. 15. CER safety specialists have gone to the site to oversee the company’s investigation of the incident, assess risks and look for potential non-compliances. Indigenous Advisory and Monitoring Committee for the project has been also been notified and CER is coordinating with WorkSafeBC.
“My thoughts are with the individual who was hurt, their family, fellow workers and all those affected by this serious incident,” said Gitane De Silva, CEO of CER. “Any incident is one too many. Every day, on every work site, people have the right to feel and stay safe. This sad occurrence brings home why we must always keep safety as our priority.”
