Manitoba commits $45 million mine remediation
The province of Manitoba is putting $45 million towards remediation of the abandoned Ruttan Mine in norther Manitoba by awarding a contract to Dauphin-based Strilkiwski Contracting Ltd. Remediation will include collection of contaminated water, improved drainage and diversion of clean water away from the site. Completion of the company’s work is scheduled for the fall of 2022.
Saskatchewan celebrates Engineering and Geosciences Week
The government of Saskatchewan is proclaiming Feb. 28 to March 9 Engineering and Geoscience Week. The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan is marking the week by continuing to make online resources available to schools including the GeoExplore Saskatchewan website and a movie titled Dream Big: Engineering Our World with accompanying resources.
Lumber prices continue to spike
Statistics Canada has reported prices for products manufactured in Canada, as measured by the Industrial Product Price Index (IPPI), rose 2.0 per cent in January, with higher prices for lumber and other wood products (up 10.8 per cent) leading the way. Prices of raw materials purchased by manufacturers operating in Canada, as measured by the Raw Materials Price Index, were up 5.7 per cent. Prices for softwood lumber increased 19.0 per cent in January, following a gain of 20.5 per cent in December. Compared with January 2020, softwood lumber prices surged 112.1 per cent. Persistent demand for softwood lumber was a contributing factor in these increases. From December to January, the annualized number of housing starts in Canada rose 23.1 per cent to 282,428 units.
