VANCOUVER — B.C.-based sustainable building tech company Nexii has partnered with Siemens to develop a new EV charger prototype.
The prototype was developed and patented for charging large numbers of electric vehicles in outdoor environments. According to Nexii, the EV charger will be built faster and more sustainably using its patented Nexiite material and modular construction methods.
The prototype was developed in six months, from ideation to implementation. Installation of the prototype took only three days at Siemens’ research and development hub for electrical products and eMobility solutions.
Nexii explained Nexiite has comparable properties to concrete with significantly less embodied carbon and a weather-resistant design. They believe the EV charger could be deployed in small office building parking lots and even large football stadiums.
Nexiite was used to create the vertical structure to support Siemens Sentron Busway systems that connect to power the EV chargers. The charging infrastructure is cast directly into Nexiite. The busway power distribution equipment is manufactured at Siemens 540-person manufacturing hub in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Nexii noted the charger’s above ground design also allows for minimal disruption to land and environment. The company added this means onsite construction waste, excavation and groundwork are near-zero with the Siemens-Nexii EV unit. There are also substantial reductions in required labour and significantly minimized potential safety issues with the rapid assembly, modular design.

Siemens and Nexii announced their corporate partnership in September 2021 as part of Nexii’s integrated technology partner program. This is the first announcement of their combined product development going to market, with several other collaboration announcements expected to come in 2022 and 2023.
