SUNDRE, ALTA.—A wastewater treatment plant in Alberta is getting $7.5 million from the province to test advanced electroflocculation technology.
The upgrades will help separate waste from water at the Sundre wastewater treatment plant while reducing the plant’s physical footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. The process utilizes electricity to remove contaminants.
The town of Sundre will receive a one-time grant for upgrades to its wastewater treatment plant after a pilot project to test new technology has been evaluated. The pilot project, which ends in 2023, is part of plans to upgrade the wastewater treatment plant with new and innovative technology. Construction will create 69 jobs.
“Water is our most precious resource,” said Rajan Sawhney, minister of transportation, in a statement. “Alberta’s government is pleased to support Sundre and other municipalities in their work to modernize core facilities, plan for future growth and meet the environmental standards of today and tomorrow.”
The total estimated project cost is $11.5 million. Estimated cost savings from the new technology is $3.5 million.
