KAMLOOPS, B.C. — The province is partnering with Thompson Rivers University to build an $18.76 million, four-storey residence on campus.

B.C. is contributing $10.85 million while the university is investing $7.91 million, according to a news release.

The modular housing building will contain 80 rooms and 140 student beds. It is part of Homes for B.C, a 10-year plan to build 144,000 beds in the province by 2028.

The plan also includes the provision of 8,000 on-campus student beds across the province.

“With this increase of on-campus housing we are now 97 per cent of the way toward our goal of 8,000 new student housing beds by 2028,” said Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training Anne Kang in the release.

Modular housing is a form of construction in which the building is prefabricated off-site and then assembled onsite.

The building is expected to be completed in the summer of 2023.

“Without secure housing, it’s extremely difficult to focus on studies or to enjoy the post-secondary experience,” Thompson Rivers’ student Chris Coulthard added.
