WHITEHORSE, YUKON — Chu Níikwän Limited Partnership has signed a $2.5 million loan agreement with the Government of Yukon to develop 150 residential lots.

The development project is at Copper Ridge West in Whitehorse. Chu Níikwän is an “arms-length development corporation” with the Kwanlin Dün First Nations, a news release states.

The project marks the first-ever large-scale housing development on First Nations Settlement Land in the Yukon.

Total development costs for the Copper Ridge project are estimated around $19.3 million.

“Finding a new way to work together represented many real challenges and would not have been possible without unprecedented cooperation from all parties. This development provides a solid framework for other Yukon First Nations to pursue and build upon and I am very proud to be a part of it,” said Kwanlin Dün Chief Doris Bill in the release.

Phase one of the project is expected to begin in spring 2023.
