New supportive housing site opens in Edmonton

EDMONTON – The Mustard Seed Prairie Manor is the newest supportive housing facility in Edmonton.

The manor was opened last summer to begin gradually moving residents in. Its 85 rooms have reached 70 per cent capacity, states a news release.

The housing was delivered through the Rapid Housing Initiative with $9.2 million from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and $1.7 million from the City of Edmonton.

The Rapid Housing Initiative is a $2.5 billion program under the National Housing Strategy dedicated to addressing the housing needs of vulnerable Canadians.

The manor features permanent housing for individuals with rents costing 30 per cent of monthly income, states the release.

Of the building’s suites, 49 are dedicated for Indigenous people.

“These 85 units are more than just safe and affordable places to live, they are key to a better life for the residents who will call them home,” said Randy Boissonnault, federal minister of tourism, in the release.
