KELOWNA, B.C. – An investigation into the July 2021 crane collapse in Kelowna, B.C. that killed five people is in its final stages, a spokesperson for WorkSafeBC said.
But there is no set date for when the investigation results will be released.
“WorkSafeBC has been working with subject matter experts and engineers to examine the crane components, sequence of events, and work procedures that took place during the crane dismantling process,” the spokesperson said in a written statement to the Journal of Commerce.
“Investigators have also examined all relevant documentation and other evidence, in addition to conducting witness interviews.”
On July 12, 2021, a crane collapsed at the site of a 25-storey tower development by Mission Group in Kelowna, killing five people.
“The primary purpose of a WorkSafeBC investigation is to identify the cause of the incident, including contributing factors, so that similar incidents can be prevented from happening in the future,” the spokesperson stated.
The crane collapsed as it was being dismantled by workers who were not a part of Mission Group. Four workers were killed and one unrelated individual was buried in rubble and died as a result of the crane failure.
