EDMONTON – The oil and gas sector in Alberta is on track to surpass the province’s methane emissions reduction target.
Between 2014 and 2021, methane emissions from the sector decreased by 44 per cent. The province set a target of a 45 per cent decrease in emissions by 2025, states a news release.
“Alberta was the first government in Canada to set a methane emissions reduction target, and we’re one per cent away from meeting it,” said Sonya Savage, minister of environment and protected areas, in the release.
The Government of Alberta has implemented several reduction programs over the years to help meet this target.
The Methane Technology Implementation Program invested nearly $24 million in methane reduction at oil and gas site projects. The province estimates this program will be responsible for cutting 17 million tonnes of methane over the lifetime of the projects.
The Alberta Methane Emissions Program, supported by $17.6 million from the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction fund, has supported government regulatory revisions, reduced costs to the industry and ensured best practices around methane detection and management.
“This is the result of strong leadership from the men and women in our industries, and investments in technology and innovation that are making a difference for our oil and gas sector,” Savage said.
