CALGARY – We are already on the road to net-zero and a new project out of the Pembina Institute is studying ways to accelerate the electrification of Canada through regulation of the highest emitting sectors.
Pembina’s Regulatory Solutions: Analysis and recommendations to accelerate the electrification of buildings, transport and gas production has received funding from the Government of Canada’s Climate Action and Awareness Fund, states a news release.
“While we have seen progress both federally and provincially being made towards reducing emissions in Canada’s electricity sector, there remain regulatory barriers which are hindering the integration of clean energy and electrified end uses into the electricity grid,” reads the release.
Regulations will be essential to ensure government and industry compliance with decarbonization of grids, a key aspect of achieving net-zero by 2035, states the institute.
“By establishing immediate and clear regulatory standards through Clean Energy Regulations, a cost-effective widescale electrification of a net-zero grid is achievable.”
