An investigation has been ordered by Alberta Occupational Health and Safety into the tipping of a crane at the worksite for the Quesnell Bridge in Edmonton.

“While the operator of the crane was trying to move a load of rebar, the crane tipped over and did some damage to the bridge,” said Chris Chodan, spokesperson for Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS).

There were no injuries.”

As a result of the incident, that happened at about 1:45 am on Aug. 8, the operator of the crane suffered cuts and bruises, but was otherwise unharmed.

The collapse caused Whitemud Drive, which links the east and west sides of the city, to be shut down at 156th Street to both east and westbound traffic.

“City of Edmonton engineers came to assess the bridge and the site was reopened for the recovery of the crane,” said Chodan.

He said an order was issued to the prime contractor, ConCreate USL, by the occupational health and safety authority to investigate the event and provide a report.

A series of orders was issued to the crane operator, Canada Crane, by OHS to provide information.

The Quesnel Bridge is one of the main routes in Edmonton over the North Saskatchewan River.

It is being expanded from four to eight lanes.
