Merritt and Kelowna receive $6 million for water infrastructure projects

KELOWNA, B.C. — The cities of Merritt and Kelowna are receiving a combined $6 million for drinking water and wastewater infrastructure projects from the Government of British Columbia.

Kelowna is receiving $3 million to strengthen Turtle Lake dams and remove aging septic systems in the Rutland area, according to a news release.

Merritt is receiving $3 million for the installation of new water meters with automatic meter-reading for residential connections, a change anticipated to reduce water consumption.

Anne Kang, minister of municipal affairs, said the province is trying to ensure its communities have the resources to protect local drinking and wastewater systems.

“Local governments across the province are working hard to improve or upgrade aging infrastructure so that our communities can continue to thrive,” said Kang in the release.

The funding is part of the province’s $450 million investment in community infrastructure to support clean drinking water and associated systems.
