HAZELTON, B.C. – Shovels are in the ground in the Village of Hazelton for the construction of 31 new affordable rental homes.
The homes will be in a three-storey building at 2720 Highway 62 and consist of one-, two- and three-bedroom homes. The building will have six accessible and seven adaptable units, reads a news release.
Rent will be set at affordable market rates for 10 of the homes and another 21 will be below market rate rentals.
The Government of British Columbia is providing $7 million to the project through BC Housing and a further $575,000 in annual operating funding.
The Wrinch Memorial Foundation will manage the building.
Julie Maitland, mayor of Hazelton, said the project will bring social and economic benefits to the village.
“Our hospital, schools and businesses will be more likely to hire and retain staff and those who need it will be more likely to find a safe and affordable place to live,” Maitland said.
