GIBSONS, B.C. — Construction on 76 new affordable homes for seniors is expected to start soon in the Town of Gibsons, B.C.
The homes will be part of a redevelopment of buildings at 824 and 840 Kiwanis Way. Phase one includes the construction of a new three-storey addition containing 29 new units to a 22-unit existing building, reads a news release.
During phase two, a four-storey, 47-unit building will replace an existing 22-unit building. In total, the project will create a net gain of 56 new units. Phase one is expected to end late 2024 and phase two in 2026.
The buildings will be wood-framed with amenities such as a common lounge, laundry, multi-purpose areas and an outdoor patio.
The Government of British Columbia is contributing roughly $8.5 million through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund. The buildings will be operated by the Kiwanis Club of Sunshine Coast.
“Seniors are seriously impacted by the housing crisis, so this much-needed housing is a welcome addition to the Sunshine Coast,” said Nicholas Simons, MLA for Powell River-Sunshine Coast, in the release.
