SNC-Lavalin announced on March 22, 2011 that it has signed a multi-year hub contract with BHP Billiton to help execute potash projects, primarily in Saskatchewan.
SNC-Lavalin will manage the Hub program and will execute feasibility studies from the hub office. The first feasibility study will concern Jansen Phase 1, located near Lanigan, Saskatchewan, to determine whether the site has a production capacity of 2 million tonnes per year.
Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) execution is projected for 2012, once BHP Billiton receives external permits and approves the implementation phase.
The full Jansen project is being designed to produce approximately 8 million tones of potash, with development planned in three phases.
