B.C. and Tahltan Nation enter agreement on Galore Creek review

VICTORIA, B.C. – The Province of British Columbia and the Tahltan Central Government have come to a decision-making agreement related to the Galore Creek copper and gold mine.

The agreement is the third of its type between B.C. and the Tahltan Central Government and focuses on collaborative assessment of proposed changes to the previously approved mining project.

B.C.’s Environmental Assessment Office and the provincial Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation are working with the Tahltan Central Government to build on previous experiences, implementing consent agreements to develop a decision-making framework for the future of the mine under the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act and the Environmental Assessment Act, a release said.

The province and the Tahltan Central Government previously signed two consent-based decision-making agreements under the Declaration Act and Environmental Assessment Act related to assessments of the proposed expansions of the Eskay Creek and Red Chris mining projects.

The provincial government will consult with Galore Creek Mining Corporation, the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, the Mining Association of British Columbia, the Association for Mineral Exploration and the Business Council of British Columbia.

Galore Creek Mining Corp. is a 50/50 partnership between Newmont and Teck Resources.
