GRAHAM CONSTRUCTION — Calgary's Peace Bridge has replace glass railings with high tension wire after vandalism in 2022.

CALGARY, ALTA. – Calgary’s iconic Peace Bridge is now fully open after a partial closure for reconstruction of its railings.

New steel tension cables have replaced the former glass railings. The Peace Bridge remained partially open to maintain public access during the full construction period after fencing was installed to protect members of the public after the railings were vandalized in 2022.

“It’s great to see the Peace Bridge restored to its full design and use through a practical and permanent solution that protects its unique design. As a gateway to our downtown, the Peace Bridge has become an iconic feature of the Calgary skyline,” Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondeck said in a statement.

The design was completed by a local architectural firm, in consultation with Santiago Calatrava Architects and Engineers, the original bridge designer and design and construction were completed within budget and the timeline anticipated, a City of Calgary release stated.

Construction for the railing replacement and repairs began at the end of April and fabrication was fulfilled off-site locally, with materials delivered onsite for mock-up quality review and installation.

“One of the biggest challenges we faced was keeping the curved railing shape and transparency, which was part of the original distinguished design, while we shifted away from glass for improved resilience and greater longevity. We are very proud of every member of the team that accomplished this task,” City of Calgary manager of bridges and structures Peter Phillips said.
