WEST VANCOUVER – Construction on the West Vancouver Place for Sport project at West Vancouver Secondary School is set to begin this month, with completion expected by winter 2025.
Mayor Mark Sager made the announcement during a council meeting recently.
Funded by the B.C. Ministry of Municipal Affairs through the Growing Communities Fund, the facility will include a variety of sports amenities.
Among them is a six-lane track and an artificial turf field – both will be equipped with lighting systems for evening competitions and practices.
Additional features will cater to various track and field activities, including long jump, high jump, triple jump, pole vault and shot put. The complex will also provide training areas for discus, hammer and javelin throwing.
As announced in February 2021, the running track will be named the Harry Jerome Oval, in honour of the celebrated Olympic sprinter. This was a joint decision by West Vancouver Schools and the District of West Vancouver.
The development also includes upgrades to the existing washrooms at West Vancouver Secondary School to enhance accessibility and convenience for public use, especially outside school hours. According to a release, these renovations, coupled with the extensive sports and training facilities, underscore the complex’s anticipated role as a significant and versatile addition to West Van’s athletic community.
