Edmonton – Alberta has rolled out its 2016 trade definitions, adding three new scopes.
They are concrete finishing, concrete formwork and cold rolled steel framing.
The Alberta Construction Trade Definitions are a complete list of inclusions and exclusions pertaining to scopes of work for trades in Alberta.
The definitions are used during the tendering process and to help co-ordinate job site activities. The list is put together by the trade definitions committee, a group of industry leaders and professionals.
They specify which contractor is responsible for specific areas of work. Tender authorities, design consultants, specification writers, contractors and suppliers can all cite and utilize the trade definitions. According to the Alberta Construction Association (ACA), by using the definitions, the industry can minimize Requests for Information (RFI), reduce error, dispute and litigation, and set a standard for more consistent and compliant bids in Alberta. The Edmonton Construction Association and the 1,250-plus member firms have endorsed adopting the new list as a best practice.
"Suppliers and subcontractors now have greater assurance of competing on a level playing field. General contractors are assured of completed bids that cover the entire scope of the project," said Ken Gibson, ACA executive director. "In the end, everyone wins."
