PORT ALBERNI — The City of Port Alberni has selected Matthews West Developments Ltd. as the development partner for the Somass Lands redevelopment project.
This announcement marks the transformation of a 43-acre waterfront property, previously the site of the Somass Division sawmill.
The project aims to create a mixed-use site that provides public access to the waterfront, enhancing the area for residents and visitors, explains a release.
Following a detailed Request for Expressions of Interest process initiated in early September 2022, the city received 16 proposals from various organizations and developers.
This led to a Request for Qualifications process where developers with the required experience and capability were invited to participate.
Chief Administrative Officer Mike Fox noted Matthews West’s successful track record in waterfront development in Squamish as a key factor in their selection. He emphasized their approach, which includes environmental considerations and master planning, as vital for a sustainable redevelopment project.
John Matthews, president of Matthews West, recognized the redevelopment as a pivotal moment in Port Alberni’s history.
Matthews West Developments Ltd., based in Squamish, B.C. is a subsidiary of Texas-based Matthews Southwest and has been involved in significant projects in partnership with the Squamish First Nation.
