New Edmonton zoning bylaw takes effect

New Edmonton zoning bylaw takes effect

EDMONTON – Edmonton’s new zoning bylaw and city-wide rezoning bylaw is now in effect.

Edmonton City Council approved the new bylaw rezoning on Oct. 23, but it came into effect on Jan. 1, replacing the old zoning bylaw, which hadn’t been substantially overhauled since the 1960s, a City of Edmonton release said.

The new bylaw takes direction from Edmonton’s City Plan, a long-term growth and development vision, and was created through a zoning bylaw renewal initiative involving five years of public engagement, research and technical analysis, the release stated.

The bylaw “supports more housing everywhere, increases business opportunities and provides greater development flexibility, allowing more people to live locally and access amenities that make Edmonton a great place to call home. It also moves Edmonton closer to the City Plan’s goal to be a healthy, urban, climate resilient and prosperous city of two million people,” according to the release.

The bylaw and a map of affected areas in Edmonton is available here.
