EDGAR DEVELOPMENT — The EDGAR Development team breaks ground on the Portwood project in Port Moody, B.C. on May 10.

PORT MOODY, B.C. – Construction has begun on the first phase of EDGAR Development’s 23-acre $1.1 billion master-planned Portwood community in Port Moody, B.C.

The start of building also marks the start of the strata condominium portion of the Portwood development, called Umbra.

Portwood is the first master plan to start construction in Port Moddy in the last decade, a release stated.

“Port Moody City Council is pleased that construction is starting for this phase of the Portwood development as the overall project will bring a diverse mix of much-needed housing to the city. It will also bring green space and amenities that will benefit the neighbourhood and the community as a whole,” Port Moody Mayor Meghan Lahti said in a statement.

Among the 219 strata homes under construction, 70 per cent are family units. A new 12,300-square-foot child care facility, grocery store, café, neighbourhood park and 1.5 kilometre multi-use nature trail are targeted for completion by early 2027.

The development will span 20 buildings between six to 19 storeys in height, creating five new neighbourhoods with a diverse range of housing, the release said. The Portwood development will deliver over 2,200 units, including 328 affordable rentals and 138 market rentals walking distance from an existing elementary school.

Around 70 per cent of the development will be green space, have 4,000 residents and will take more than a decade to complete, the release said.
