VICTORIA, B.C. – The Government of British Columbia will make significant improvements to Salt Spring Island, B.C.’s highway system beginning this summer.
Improvements to Fulford-Ganges Road will improve sightlines and access for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists and new paving infrastructure is planned to extend the life of the roadway with the addition of new markings, crosswalks, speed-reader boards and refuge areas to enhance safety, a release said.
Work includes pulverizing and rebuilding the road base, resurfacing and grading to introduce new, paved shoulders on both sides of Fulford-Ganges Road and adding enhancements for safety and active transportation such as signs, paint markings, crosswalks and refuge areas for cyclists.
A new underground storm-sewer drainage system for the length of the project will be built as well as a staging area to install a large culvert at Cranberry Road to reduce the risk of flood and road damage.
The $22.9-million project is being funded through B.C.’s Climate Adaptation and Preservation program and has been awarded to Victoria-based Northridge Excavating Ltd.
Construction is anticipated to start after the Labour Day weekend in September and be complete by summer 2025.
