SICAMOUS, B.C. – Work on the replacement of the R.W. Bruhn Bridge in Sicamous, B.C. will begin soon, according to the Government of British Columbia.
A $136 million contract for the project has been awarded to AECON-Emil Anderson GP and work will begin in the coming weeks to improve 2.5 kilometres of Highway 1.
The project includes four-laning 1.9 kilometres of highway, replacing the R.W. Bruhn Bridge with a new four-lane structure, and upgrading intersections between Old Sicamous Road and Silver Sands Road, a release said.
Once the project is complete, the intersection at Old Spallumcheen Road will be closed on Highway 1 and replaced with safer access that eliminates left turns.
The project also includes a new multi-use path to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists travelling across the Sicamous Narrows and into Sicamous.
Total project cost is estimated at $260 million which includes approximately $91.1 million from the federal government under the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component of the New Building Canada Fund.
On Aug. 24 a semi-truck hit the bridge and ripped out approximately 70 feet of railing on the eastbound lane before falling into the Sicamous channel below.
Despite this tragic event, the release said, the timing and scope of the work will not be affected.
