EDMONTON — Six competitors from Alberta who represented Canada at the 47th WorldSkills competition in Lyon, France in September were honoured and celebrated by the province recently.
Every two years, teams from all over the world compete in a variety of skilled trade and technology-based challenges at the WorldSkills competition. With events in both secondary and post-secondary categories, youth have the opportunity to showcase their skills in the trade or technology of their choice, explains a release.
Four of the six competitors took part in construction related skills tests. Walter Loedeman from Lethbridge College took part in heavy vehicle technology; Noah Harding from SAIT in plumbing; Tyler Cherkowski from SAIT in refrigeration and air conditioning; and Ben Rainforth from Red Deer Polytechnic in welding.
Judy Lan of NAIT took part in baking and Brooke Potiuk from Brooks Composite High School competed in 3D digital game art to round out the Alberta competitors.
It should be noted Rainforth took home bronze in the welding event, standing out among the best welders in the world.
“Ben’s success speaks volumes about the talent and dedication of Alberta’s skilled tradespeople, and the strength of Alberta’s training and skills development ecosystem,” states a release.
Skills Canada Alberta was established in 1992.
