B.C. will see more than $6.4 billion in new hospital construction starting in 2025 and some in 2026 as the NDP follows through on its commitment to build and upgrade 30 hospital projects or health facilities, 11 long-term care centres and four cancer centres in five health regions.
The figure does not include the $1.9 billion four-phase Richmond hospital redevelopment with some phase costs not issued. The figure also does not include smaller projects valued below $200 million.
This year’s or 2026 projects include:
FRASER HEALTH
- Abbotsford long-term care (LTC): A 200-bed facility replacing the 109-bed Cottage Worthington Pavilion. Construction to begin in 2025 and be complete in 2027. Cost $211 million.
- Burnaby Hospital redevelopment Phase 2: A 160-bed inpatient tower and cancer centre. Construction starts in late 2025, complete in 2030. Cost $1.73 billion. Alliance development agreement finalized with PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. and Parkin Architects Western Ltd.
- Chilliwack (LTC) facility: A five-storey, 200-bed home near Chilliwack General Hospital, to replace the 90-bed Bradley Centre and add 110 new beds at a capital cost of $274 million. Currently in procurement with construction expect to start in 2026 and complete in 2029.
INTERIOR HEALTH
- Kamloops Cancer Centre: Costing $359 million. Has seen two teams selected for a request for proposal with EllisDon Corporation and PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. to put forward design and build options for the centre at Royal Inland Hospital. The project’s design-build team will be chosen by May 2025, with construction beginning summer 2025. Completion date is projected to be 2028.
- Penticton LTC facility: A planned-200 bed facility with Interior Health awarding the project to Kaigo Senior Living, an experienced developer and operator of LTC services. Kaigo will design, build and operate the facility with construction to start in 2025 and complete in No cost is given.
- Vernon Jubilee Hospital Inpatient Psych Unit: A new building with 44 single-occupancy rooms, including a four-bed stabilization unit. Currently in planning. Construction to start in 2026 and complete by 2029. No cost provided.
- Caribou Memorial Hospital Project (Williams Lake): Phase two will begin when phase one completes in 2026 and will include further renovations scheduled to be complete in 2029. The total project includes a three-storey additions to the hospital while the second is a renovation of existing facilities. Total cost: $367 million.
ISLAND HEALTH
- New Western Communities Colwood: A LTC 306-bed facility to start construction in 2025 in the Royal Bay area. It will include a hospice, a specialized unit for younger people with brain injuries and an adult day program. Cost is estimated at $224 million and completion is 2027. Stantec has served as lead consultant and architect with the facility built to a LEED Gold certification.
- Nanaimo Cancer Centre: A new facility alongside a renovation and expansion of the existing community oncology clinic at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Construction is to start summer 2025 and complete in 2028. The estimated cost is $289 million.
- Nanaimo LTC: Another 309-bed LTC home with a hospice and special unit for those with traumatic brain injury, mental health and substance abuse issues. Construction to start in 2025, complete in 2027 and cost $286 million. Stantec is serving as lead consultant and architect with the facility built to a LEED Gold certification.
NORTHERN HEALTH
- Prince George’s University Hospital of Northern B.C. is finishing a $103 million site development and parkade project completing in 2026 which kicks off phase two, a $1.58 billion patient tower and upgrade. The 211-bed tower will upgrade service, add critical programs and design space, plus enhance cardiac, surgical and mental health programs. Construction is to start fall 2026 and complete in 2031.
VANCOUVER COASTAL HEALTH
- Richmond Hospital Redevelopment: A four-phase project costing $1.9 billion with the second phase to start in 2026 and finishes in 2029 after the contract is awarded in 2025. Three teams are shortlisted for the new 216-Yurkovich Family Pavilion. They are: Bird Design-Build Construction Inc., Stantec Architecture Ltd., AtkinsRéalis Major Projects Inc., and AtkinsRéalis Canada Inc.; EllisDon Corporation, DIALOG BC Architecture Engineering Interior Design Planning Inc., PML Professional Mechanical Ltd., and Houle Electric Limited; and Graham Design Builders LP and HDR Architecture Associates, Inc.
- Vancouver Centre for Children and Youth living with complex chronic conditions: Ledcor is selected as the design-build contractor to lead construction. Demolition of the Sunny Hill Health Centre at the same location is complete, with construction anticipated to begin in spring 2025 and substantial completion expected by December 2027 and complete in 2028. Cost anticipated at $267 million.
- Vancouver Clinical Support and Research facility: This is set to be next to the new St. Paul’s Hospital. It will include research laboratories, physician medical offices, administration and third-party commercial spaces and a child day care centre. Construction starts in 2025 and completes in 2029 at a cost of $638 million.
- Vancouver St. Vincent’s Heather LTC facility: A new 240-bed home to start construction in 2025 and complete in 2028 at an estimated cost of $207 million.
