A construction worker was killed recently at Suncor Energy Inc.'s (TSX:SU) Firebag site in the Alberta oilsands north of Fort McMurray.
"The 55-year-old man was working for Flint Transfield Services, when a piece of equipment came loose and struck him in the chest," said Sorcha Thomas, spokesperson with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S).
The incident happened at 4 p.m. on July 31.
According to Suncor spokesperson Chad Cummins, the man was undertaking non-essential construction, or maintenance work, on a steam assisted gravity drainage well pad at the Firebag site.
“The man suffered serious injuries and was transported hospital,” said Thomas. “He died Monday morning.”
Suncor said non-critical maintenance activities were shut down immediately at the affected well pad, due to the seriousness of the incident.
Thomas said a stop work order been issued for the well pad and remains in effect while Occupational Health and Safety officers investigate.
“The OH&S investigation will focus on the cause of the fatality and whether compliance with safety regulations was being met,” said Thomas.
It’s not yet known what type of equipment struck the man.
Suncor is working with the appropriate authorities and Flint Transfield Services to complete a full investigation into the cause of the incident.
"We extend our sincere condolences to the worker's family, friends and co-workers,” said Mike MacSween, Suncor's senior vice president.
“They are certainly in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time."
The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
