Alberta-based Agra Foundations fined for 2007 accident

Balzac, Alberta based Agra Foundations Ltd. was convicted and fined recently under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Employment Standards Code.

A crane operator's left leg was drawn into the rotating drums of the draw works of a crane and he sustained serious leg injuries in July 2007. His left leg was amputated.

The company pleaded guilty to Section 7(1) of the Occupational Health and Safety Code, failing to assess a worksite and identify existing or potential hazards before work began. It was ordered to pay a fine of $5000, plus a Victim Fine Surcharge of $750.

In addition, under Section 41.1 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the company was ordered to pay $85,000 to the Alberta Construction Safety Association to develop two safety courses.
