Security guard viciously beaten at school construction site

Richard Gilbert

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are searching for three men who brutally attacked a security guard and left him for dead at a school construction site in Port Coquitlam, B.C. earlier this week.

"One guy entered into the construction site and told Hoshiyar that he was being followed and threatened by two men,” said Gurjeet (Greg) Lidder, cofounder and owner of Canuck Security Services.

“While the guy involved Hoshiyar in small talk, he was approached from behind by two guys and hit in the head. He was struggling with them and fell down. They ran away and left him for dead.”

Security guard Hoshiyar Bajwa, 65, was on shift in the early hours of Oct. 14.

He was working at the construction site of a new building at the Pitt River Community Middle School in Port Coquitlam.

“Bajwa claims he was hit with a metal rod, but we don’t know what was used,” said Arvinder (Rob) Panesar, who is Lidders’s partner in the ownership and operation of Canuck Security Services. “

He was hit multiple times on the head. His head was totally smashed.” The three suspects ran away without stealing anything from the site.

Somehow Bajwa managed to make a call for help.

“Hoshiyar got up, went to his car and called dispatch to let them know of the incident and that he was injured,” said Lidder.

“It was because of the actions of an alert dispatcher that the supervisor, police, fire department and ambulance all arrived on the scene within 15 minutes.”

According to Lidder, Bajwa called the dispatcher at 3:50 a.m. and his supervisor Rupinder Sagoo called him back at 3:51 am.

Sagoo drove from Surrey to help Bajwa and arrived at the construction site between 4 a.m. and 4:15 am.

He was the first person from Canuck Security to arrive at the scene.

The victim was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital and is recovering from a serious eye injury, as well as cuts to his head that required between about 100 stitches.

The RCMP have confirmed Bajwa was attacked and beaten, but are not discussing the details of the case as it is under investigation.

“The victim was working as a security guard at a construction site, when he was attacked by three males,” said Port Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung.

“One male approached the vehicle and got his attention. The next thing, they were in a fight, with the security guard defending himself. Then, he became aware there were two other males also attacking him.”

Chung said the fight went on for a while and then all three men fled the scene. The victim called 911 for help and was transported to hospital.

Police were unable to confirm if Bajwa was beaten with a metal rod.

The RCMP said the first suspect is a white male, about 5’7’’ tall, who was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt with a stripe.

“We are looking for everything and anything in the area, including video and talking to people in the neighbourhood,” the officer said.

Canuck Security Services was established by Lidder and Panesar in 2006 to provide security guard services and electronic surveillance.

The company started with one employee and currently employs about 250 people.

Lidder is a retired army colonel, who served 25 years in the Indian Army. Bajwa also served in the Indian Army.
