Alberta RCMP and Occupational Health and Safety are investigating the death of a worker, who is suspected of drowning at the site of a water treatment plant under construction near Fort McMurray, Alberta.
“The RCMP investigation is ongoing as we wait for a report from the medical examiner,” said Const. Christina Wilkins, spokesperson for the Wood Buffalo RCMP.
“We have reason to believe the death may be related to drowning, but we can’t confirm this until we get that report.”
Wood Buffalo RCMP were dispatched to the water treatment facility on Silin Forest Road, near Highway 63, at about 8 a.m. on Sept. 26, to assist emergency medical services (EMS).
When they arrived, EMS was dealing with the body of a previously missing worker, who was found submerged inside one of the buildings at the facility.
The victim, a 32 year-old male from Sherwood Park, Alberta, was pronounced deceased on scene.
“The RCMP get called in on all deaths and we investigate suspicious deaths,” said Wilkins.
“Our involvement in this case is minor because we don’t suspect there was any foul play, but we can’t confirm this until we get the report.”
Although foul play isn’t suspected at this time, the police investigation continues, as does the investigation by Alberta Occupational Health and Safety.
“I was extremely saddened to learn of this tragic event,” said Fort McMurray Mayor Melissa Blake.
“On behalf of the municipality, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to family and friends who have been affected. During this difficult time, our community mourns with you.”
