Charges have been upgraded against a cement truck driver that is accused of slamming his truck into the back of a stopped car and killing five people in Calgary.

Daniel Tschetter, 50, was originally charged with five counts of dangerous driving causing death. The crash took place at Macleod Trail and 194th Avenue SW in Calgary on Dec. 7. The cement truck pushed the car, which was stopped at a red light, for about one-third of a kilometre before stopping. The Crown prosecutor announced during a short court proceeding in Calgary on Jan. 18 that Tschetter is now facing five counts of manslaughter and five counts of criminal negligence causing death. He could receive life in prison if convicted on the new charges. Chris Gautreau, 41, and his two daughters were killed in the crash, along with his fiancée, Melaina Hovdebo, 33, and her 16-month-old son.

Tschetter has been held in custody since the incident, but is making a bail application.
