EDMONTON – Edmonton’s MacEwan University broke ground this month on a new student association building.
The facility will be located on the east side of 109 Street, adjacent to the Christenson Family Centre for Sport and Wellness and will be called the Students’ Association of MacEwan University (SAMU) building.
At more than 50,000 square feet, the building will provide space for studying, clubs and programs and SAMU services. The new facility will also be LEED Silver certified, supporting SAMU and MacEwan’s commitment to sustainability, explains a release.
At the groundbreaking event, SAMU president Danika McConnell spoke of how the project evolved from vision to reality, crediting the support of MacEwan’s students.
"Five years ago, our student council determined that investing in this building could establish a greater student voice and connect us deeper within our campus and the downtown core," she said. "A project like this only highlights the power of students and what we can accomplish when we all put our heads together."
The building was approved via student referendum in October 2015, and will be funded through a levy of $35 per student, per term, which will take effect when the building opens.
Construction is anticipated to begin in the next few weeks, with completion slated for fall 2019.
The SAMU hosts campus events, advocates for the needs and rights of students and administers key services like health benefits and U-Passes, the release reads.
