Good news has been in short supply this year. Thankfully, the holiday season often brings out the best in the construction industry. The following is a small sample of some the charitable efforts industry companies, organizations and labour groups are undertaking to help others during one of the most difficult times in Canada’s history.
United to give
The BC Building Trades made a special delivery of $5,000 to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, the UBC Diabetes Research Centre and Variety BC. The Building Trades also highlighted that the Construction and Specialized Worker’s Union Local 1611 added $10,000 to the efforts plus food donations.
Cementing generosity
Lafarge Canada’s Saskatoon team filled a box truck to the brim with food for the Saskatoon Food Bank. Each month the food bank serves around 20,000 people through its emergency food basket program. Almost half are children.
Island playtime
Vancouver Island Construction Association members took notes from Santa Clause this year, donating more than $12,500 in toys and cash through the association’s annual Toy Drive in support of Santa’s Anonymous and other charities across Vancouver Island.
Happy hour
The Vancouver Regional Construction Association held its first-ever virtual Happy Hour to raise money for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau and the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. In total, the event raised more than $23,000 for charity.
Feeding the rainy city
Adera Development has crushed it’s $5,000 fundraising goal for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. As of Dec. 21, the team had raised nearly $9,000. The food bank helps feed those in the many cities in the greater Vancouver area.
Growing generosity
Ledcor Group is sponsoring the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation Festival of Trees. Participants can donate and vote for their favourite tree which raises money for children undergoing treatment. This year, the trees can be viewed online with a 360-degree camera.
Hungry capital
Tomlinson Group is organizing donations for the Ottawa Food Bank. The team plans to raise at least $500 for the food bank, which provides emergency food service to its community food programs and their clients during the harsh winter months.
Keeping warm
Graham Construction’s team in Calgary donated 350 winter jackets to Inn from the Cold, a charity dedicated to help families impacted by homelessness.
Good neighbours
Members of Bird Construction’s team in Atlantic Canada made a contribution to Veith House – a neighbourhood hub in the North End of Halifax committed to connecting neighbours with each other and needed services. Bird B.C. donated to Ksan Society, which provides social programs, safe shelter to women and their children fleeing abuse. Ksan also assists people experiencing homelessness.
The perfect finish
Members of Carpenters’ Union Local 27 in Toronto collected more than 100 toys for the CTV News Toy Mountain. Each year CTV Toronto works with the Salvation Army to provide toys to children and teens. Local 27 stated it is proud to support the event every year.
