Diamond Schmitt names new directors and associates
DIAMOND SCHMITT - Architecture firm Diamond Schmitt has appointed 14 associates and advanced two individuals into director positions.

Architecture firm Diamond Schmitt has expanded its design firm and management teams with 14 new appointees including several from western Canada.

“These promotions acknowledge the talent, breadth of experience and design depth in our studio across a wide range of projects as we continue to grow our practice,” Diamond Schmitt Architects principal Donald Schmitt said.

Rod Mass has been named technical director of the firm’s Vancouver studio along with newly appointed associate Elena Chernyshov who is working on a rezoning project in Vancouver, a commercial project in

Victoria, the Cameron Community Centre and Library in Burnaby and Oakridge Presentation Centre.

Wen-Ling Yu has been promoted to a senior associate position. She relocated to the Vancouver office in 2017 and is the project architect for four residential towers at Oakridge Centre, having previously worked on redevelopment of Toronto’s Mirvish Village.

New associate Fernanda Rubin recently worked on the University of British Columbia Undergraduate Biosciences Complex and is currently working on a residential tower in Mississauga as well as a cultural project in Calgary, Alta.

The new design technologies director in Toronto is Claudia Cozzitorto, and Walton Chan, Cecily Eckhart,

Eric Lucassen, and Jessica Shifman have all been promoted to senior associates.

Chan is working on design of seven Ottawa LRT stations and Eckhart guiding the Laboratory Modernization for Environment and Climate Change at the Canada Centre for Inland Waters in Burlington, Ontario.

Lucassen is currently working on the National Research Council of Canada Centre for Advanced Material Manufacturing in Mississauga and previously completed the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Health Centre. Shifman recently completed phase one of renewal at Toronto’s Holy Blossom Temple and is contributing to design competitions and work on the Ottawa LRT expansion.

New associate Jessica Chung is currently the project manager for the York University Markham Campus Centre, and Chris Hughes is working on the Security Centre for the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto.

Newly appointed associate Dieter Janssen is currently the project architect for the University of Guelph’s MacKinnon Building renovation for their College of Arts and IICSI program. Giuseppe Mandarino is working on the early 20the century Michael Garron Hospital project in Toronto to transform the facility in to a modern centre and a hub for an eastside Toronto neighbourhood.

Judith Martin is working on the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary, and new associate Arne Suraga is working on a Passive Haus residential project for Toronto Community Housing, the Carleton University Engineering Design Centre in Ottawa and Transit City residential towers in Vaughan.

Associate Jose Trinidad is using computational design for work on David Geffen Hall in New York and Buddy Holly Hall which opens this year in Texas.

Diamond Schmitt Architects in based in Toronto with studios in Vancouver and Toronto and consists of 19 principals, nine senior associates and 28 associates.
