Alberta hits record number of homes under construction in May

EDMONTON – The Alberta government is touting May’s housing numbers with a record number of homes under construction.

Data from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation reported 4,113 housing starts with total housing starts in the province reaching 17,673 to date from January to May, an increase of over 50 per cent from the previous year.

Edmonton has seen 1,830 new housing starts in May, an increase of more than 110 per cent over May 2023. In Calgary, there have been almost 2,000 housing starts in May, consistent with May 2023, a release said.

A recent report by ATB Financial also said over 40 per cent more residential building permits have been issued year-to-date in 2024 compared to 2023.

“Alberta’s significant increase in housing starts underscores industry’s commitment and successful collaboration with the Government of Alberta, driving a notable surge in residential construction. Streamlined processes and reduced barriers enable builders to meet demand more efficiently, ensuring expanded housing options for all Albertans,” BILD Alberta Association director of political policy and government relations Saheb Dullet stated.

ATB Financial’s recent OWL report also said 44 per cent more residential building permits have been issued January to April including a 36 per cent increase in permits issued for single-detached homes and a 53 per cent increase in permits issued for multi-residential dwellings.
