Alberta company get $60,000 workplace injury fine from Saskatchewan court

REGINA, SASK. – An Alberta steel company has been fined $60,000 by Regina Provincial Court for an incident that resulted in a workplace injury.

Varsteel Ltd. of Lethbridge, Alta. pled guilty to contravening section 129 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 1996 on Sept. 25. Section 129 refers to being an employer and failing to ensure no material is stacked or stored so as to constate a hazard to workers and/or results in a serious worker injury.

Varsteel was fined $42,857.15 and a surcharge of $17,142.86 for an incident on August 28, 2017 near Regina where a worker suffered injuries after being struck by two bundles of steel.
