Funding available for 2020 flood victims in B.C. regions

Funding available for 2020 flood victims in B.C. regions
PROVINCE OF B.C. — Crews work to mitigate flooding in B.C.’s Peace Region this June. The province recently announced funding for homeowners, renters, businesses and local governments that have been impacted by flooding.

VICTORIA — Those who have been impacted by flooding this year can now access Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA). Officials announced funding is available for eligible British Columbians in the following regions who may have been impacted by overland flooding from June 14 to July 13, 2020:

  • Cariboo Regional District
  • Fraser Fort George Regional District
  • Peace River Regional District
  • Northern Rockies Regional Municipality

This assistance includes all First Nations communities, electoral areas and municipalities within the geographic boundaries of these regional districts.

The funds can be accessed by homeowners, residential tenants, small business owners, farmers, charitable organizations and local government bodies who were not able to acquire insurance to cover these disaster-related losses.

Applications for this DFA event must be submitted to Emergency Management BC by Oct. 16, 2020.

B.C. residents can access the DFA application at: http://www.gov.bc.ca/disasterfinancialassistance

Officials noted applicants should be aware that financial assistance is provided for each accepted claim at 80 per cent of the amount of total eligible damage that exceeds $1,000, to a maximum claim of $300,000.

And claims may be made in more than one category (e.g., homeowner and farm owner).

For homeowners or residential tenants, officials require proof that the home is their principal residence. Seasonal or recreational properties, hot tubs, patios, pools, garden tools, landscaping, luxury items (such as jewelry, fur coats and collectibles) and recreational items (such as bicycles) are not eligible for assistance.

The fund requires small business owners and farm owners to demonstrate that their farms and businesses are their primary source of income.

Officials added that local governments can receive funds for recovery measures to replace essential materials and rebuild or replace essential public infrastructure to the condition it was in before the disaster. Assistance is provided for each accepted recovery claim at 80 per cent of the amount of total eligible damage that exceeds $1,000.
