Provincial and federal governments fund southern Alberta construction projects

EDMONTON — The Alberta government and the Government of Canada are putting more than $52.7 million towards the completion of four infrastructure projects in southern Alberta using the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

The four projects are infrastructure improvements at the University of Lethbridge, Medicine Hat College and Red Crow Community College and a French community-based project in Calgary.

“Today, we announce a federal investment of $21.9 million to support four key projects for your province. This includes a new campus at Red Crow College to replace the building destroyed in the 2015 fire and two Indigenous gathering spaces at the University of Lethbridge and at Medicine Hat College,” said federal Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development Maryam Monsef in a statement.

“Medicine Hat College will also use the funds to build a more energy-efficient and accessible building. The French Community of Calgary will improve its building and workspace.”

The new building at Red Crow College will include classrooms, workshops, labs, academic and counselling spaces for students, and administrative and program spaces for employees. It will also have a library, cafeteria, day care, museum and archival space, a cultural teaching and gathering space, and an area for elders.

Medicine Hat College will build a 1,333 metre extension as well as repurpose 861 square metres of existing space. A new lift will be installed to make the lower level more accessible and a structure for future solar panel installation will be placed on the roof of the building.

The University of Lethbridge space will feature an Indigenous gathering space for talking circles led by elders and for use in celebrations and other events and will use a smudging exhaust system.

The Government of Canada is investing $21.9 million in the projects through the Community, Culture and Recreation Infrastructure Stream and the Rural and Northern Communities Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada plan.

The Alberta government is providing $125,000 while funding applicants contribute $30.7 million.
