Lawyer appointed BC Labour Relations Board chair

VICTORIA —A new chair has been appointed for the BC Labour Relations Board and the Employment Standards Tribunal.

The board announced that Jennifer Glougie will take on the role.

The appointment was announced by David Eby, attorney general, who said Glougie was chosen after a merit-based recruitment process.

Glougie holds a law degree from the University of Victoria and a PhD in linguistics from the University of British Columbia.

She is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia and the Canadian Bar Association, as well as the Canadian Linguistics Association, the International Association of Forensic Linguists and the International Law and Language Association.

Glougie’s private practice participated in labour education through the Canadian Labour Congress and various labour councils throughout the province. Glougie has served as associate chair of the BC Labour Relations Board since May 2018.

Glougie will take over as chair from Jacquie de Aguayo, whose term ends Feb. 4, 2022.

“As a senior official at the Labour Relations Board since 2014 and chair since February 2018, de Aguayo has built respect in both labour and employer communities for her inclusive leadership abilities and her application of the law,” said a release from the board.

The board is an independent administrative tribunal with the mandate to mediate and resolve disputes related to unionized workplaces under the Labour Relations Code. The Employment Standards Tribunal conducts hearings of appeals and decisions made by the Employment Standards Branch, which is established under the Employment Standards Act. The mechanisms are intended to give workers and employers the tools to resolve workplace disputes fairly and quickly.
