B.C. investing $30 million in rural sewage infrastructure in Comox

VICTORIA – The Government of British Columbia is investing $30 million in sewage infrastructure in rural areas of the Comox Valley Regional District.

In a news release, the province writes the investment will “advance reconciliation with K’ómoks First Nation” and support the health of residents and the environment.

Royston and Union Bay currently depend on onsite septic systems that are more than 25 years old and at risk of failure.

The Comox Valley Sewer Extension South Project will provide wastewater services to Union Bay and Royston through the regional treatment system, the release reads. It will also include service to the K’ómoks First Nation Treaty Settlement Lands south of Courtenay.

“The province’s funding announcement today secures an important component of the K’ómoks Treaty negotiation and planning process,” said elected Chief Councillor Chief Ken Price in the release.

“The economic development of our Treaty Settlement Lands and resulting benefits for our members hinges on removing key barriers to development, such as bringing water and sewer service to these proposed parcels.”
