EDMONTON, ALTA. – If you thought what was missing from the Alberta Legislature was a man-made river, the province has you covered.

The Government of Alberta and federal government are investing $20 million to restore existing pools, install a new water feature and remove wading pools at the legislature in Edmonton, states a news release.

Some 4,000 Albertans voted on what the new feature would be, with 65 per cent voting in favour of a “River” concept.

The work is part of a larger project to improve the north plaza. The reflecting pool and ornamental dome fountain will receive repairs, piping will be replaced, mechanical and filtration systems upgraded and leaks fixed as part of the project.

“Thanks to this project, the north plaza will have a great new gathering place to enjoy in the summer months,” said Nathan Cooper, speaker of the legislative assembly of Alberta, in the release.

The 2022 capital plan is providing $10 million in funding and another $10 million is coming through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

I remember when the original pool and park was constructed back in 1979 Including the enclosure of 97 ave and the east parkade ( which was defered) the total cost was less than 20 Million. The big issue than was what to do with all the trees that were dotting the site.
