The big bang: protecting Vancouver’s bridges from ship strikes

The big bang: protecting Vancouver’s bridges from ship strikes

VICTORIA – The Government of British Columbia is advancing work to protect two iconic bridges from possible ship strikes.

A request for qualifications has been issued for engineering services to design protections for Lions Gate Bridge and Memorial Bridge, states a news release.

The collision barrier for the Lions Gate Bridge would be an enhancement of the existing concrete collar at the base of the south tower with an in-water rock-fill berm. The north tower of the bridge already has this protection.

The Ironworkers Memorial Bridge will receive an in-water deflection structure.

“Both bridges are of critical importance to people throughout the Lower Mainland, as well as to the regional, provincial and national economies,” writes the province in its release.

The vessel-strike protections come amid ongoing rehabilitation and seismic retrofits for both bridges.

The Memorial bridge serves roughly 125,000 trips every day while Lions Gate sees some 60,000 trips.
