$325M federal investment intended to help Calgary electrify public transit

CALGARY — The Government of Canada has announced a $325 million federal investment to help the City of Calgary electrify transit buses.

Previously, the city received $165 million from the Canada Infrastructure Bank to purchase and deploy 259 new zero emission electric buses, according to a news release.

“This contribution will allow us to transition the transit fleet to zero-emission vehicles more quickly and adds to funding already secured,” said Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek in the release.

In the next several years, Calgary is also completing upgrades to two transit garages ― the Spring Gardens and Anderson Garages ― by installing charging cabinets and dispensers with spare capacity for future electric bus purchases.

The federal investment will also support equipment procurement, training, design and engineering services, and utility works.

“When it comes to climate change, we are committed to taking actions which are both economically and environmentally sustainable,” said Gondek.

The $325.2 million in funding is through the Zero Emission Transit Fund.
