Intake open for quarry rehabilitation grants in Manitoba

WINNIPEG — The Government of Manitoba is accepting applications for its Quarry Rehabilitation on Private and Municipal Land program, offering grants of up to $200,000.

The grants are available for owners of private and municipal land with a registration certificate or private quarry permit issued since 1992.

In order to apply, rehabilitation projects must protect the environment against adverse effects, minimize detrimental impact on adjoining lands, minimize hazards to public safety and leave the site in a state that is compatible with adjoining land uses, according to a news release.

Eligible project activities include sloping and grading, moving oversized boulders and other materials, spreading overburden and topsoil and purchasing seed to cover graded areas.

There will be a maximum of $1.8 million available in funding through the 2023-24 program. The program has distributed $12 million to 130 projects in the past three years.

“Our government continues to make targeted investments to support the increased interest in Manitoba as a world-class mining destination,” said Jeff Wharton, minister of investment and trade, in the release.

Wharton said the program supports “the rehabilitation of depleted pits and quarries.”
