SLAVE LAKE, ALTA. – The Alberta government is putting $1.9 million towards HVAC system upgrades for Northern Lakes College in Slave Lake, Alta., as well as putting $250,000 into a one-time grant for the school’s pre-employment plumber program.

The 16-week program will help students build their skills and prepare to become an apprentice plumber, a release said, and instruction will include plumbing and gas theory, blueprint reading, sketching and a practicum will help them prepare students to enter a plumber apprenticeship.

Northern Lakes College serves a region of 164,000 square kilometres with campuses or community access points in 25 communities, including 15 First Nations and four Metis settlements.

Alberta’s 2023 budget committed more broadly to invest in northeast Alberta educational institutions with a total of $14.9 million for Athabasca University, Keyano College, Northern Lakes College and Portage College, including $3.1 million to create 669 seats in high-demand programs, $2.1 million to support seats for apprentices and $9.7 million to update campus facilities.
